MISSION
A zine? It must be an academic journal. Why would graduate students start a zine? What is the purpose of it?
Throughout our careers, we have seen how the academic elite selects what is worthy of being called knowledge. However, throughout our personal experiences, we have seen that this fiction denies countless forms of knowledge that are not expressed through correct writing, in a recognized language and under the guidelines of an indexed journal.
We believe that knowledge is expressed from human experiences and through different cultural and creative forms. Poetry, fiction, images, sounds, the body have created and continue to create emotions and knowledge on the periphery of academia. They are not just products, they are not just objects, they are not categorizable as high or low culture. They are feelings, they are ideas, they are living, organic and necessary knowledge.
Therefore, we consider it of great benefit for our institution to blur borders and categories to bring it closer to the diverse, contradictory, loud and unstable human experience. This is the purpose of (Zine)Lugar, to imagine a third space, without definitive categories or borders, a democratic and communitarian space. We want to create a place of belonging and reflection for all those who feel related to Latinidad and want to share their human knowledge through art, creativity and experience.
My house has no borders
It has no name
I inhabit it from my body
It cries colors, breathes stories and shouts songs
My place has no place
It has no doors, it has no walls, it has no house
but we build it and inhabit it
and in it our names resonate
(Zine)Lugar aims to
Democratize knowledge
Create a diverse community
Create a place of belonging and reflection
Create a place for the expression of different forms of art and experience
